I Wish I Knew Then…

The journey of a million dollars begins with one power button.

If you have spent any time ever putting together a project that cost a lot of money, you have lost money because you didn’t know then what you know now.

Looking back on my work with prior organizations, I’m amused at how I was able to get some things done. When I started at Best Buy, my boss said, “The network is yours.” For four years, I never received any direction on the network. This was largely because the people above me didn’t know how to run it either. You learn the hard way.

There are so many things I know now that I wish I knew then. Among them:

  • What IT’s role is in a network.
  • Just how truly important sound is to an environment experience.
  • That guidelines, not rules, that education, not intimidation, are the key to winning the hearts, minds, and money of advertisers and providers.
  • That you have to begin with the end in mind.
  • That the value of branding on a network is greater than any money made off advertising.
  • That you can’t let perfect get in the way of good.
  • That someone with an agenda will get in the way.

With that, I want to know from you what you know now that you wish you knew then. You can be as vague or specific as you want.

What is about digital signage that you learned the hard way?
